Blam recently came into this call out for QLD Comic authors and artists. The idea is to get QLD comic artist to collab and contribute to a non-for-profit black and white publication. Sounds like a soild plan to me. All artists of all sorts are encouraged to apply. Everything from Sunday morning newspaper strips to 8 page storys. Digital or traditional media are both fine, just as long as you have a story, from start to finish.

Operation Oh Captain, My Captain

This comes in the wake of over 9000 threads /b/ made supporting Conan when the news came down On January 12.

The primary means of achieving this is through twitter. While twitter is generally seen as fucking stupid by the denizens of 4chan, it can be a powerful tool to get the word out.

Use the tag #ohcaptainmycaptain in conjunction with #teamconan and #keepconan to make the first tag start trending.

Message #teamconan celebrities and try to get them to RT (re-tweet) the message. Once they use the tag, everyone following them will, too, and it’ll explode.

The basic goal is to get someone from the LA area to get in contact with someone who is going to be in the Tonight Show audience and relay them the instructions.

Step by step instructions on how you can help:

1. Get a twitter account.
2. Subscribe to these people:

8. Every single audience member starts doing it, row by row, they all stand on their chairs and show their support for Conan
9. Conan is touched, it get all over the news, it's a grand moment for the internet, Conan, and The Tonight Show all of Television History.

If you want this to work, you need someone in LA to get to the audience. Use facebook, twitter, etc... Make and bring signs, flyers, docs, etc with all the instructions! Print out a few copies of every the flyer to the right and pass it out to audience members. The goal of twitter is to reach SOMEONE in LA who can do the following:

The Conan audience holding area is on Lankershim Blvd in Universal City, just outside of Gate 3 into Universal. The audience gathers around 2-3pm. If someone could get there with a sign or something you might have a chance of this happening. Tell them about Operation Oh Captain My Captain. Relay how many people on twitter and the internet are counting on them.

Better yet, print out copies of the instructions, get to the line, assign a leader to pass long the info.

Tell them to make sure the entire audience knows what to do BEFORE it happens. Go over the plan during commercials breaks. Make sure it's organized.

The last segment on Conan is the musical guest. As soon as the song ends Conan goes over and says Goodbye and the music plays.

GET THE AUDIENCE TO DO IT AS SOON AS THE MUSICAL ACT ENDS, BEFORE CONAN SAYS SOMETHING, AND BEFORE THE BAND STARTS PLAYING AND DROWNS OUT THE CROWD'S CHANTING.

Welcome to the sixth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art – known as APT6 – the major attraction at the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Art Gallery until April 2010.

The exhibition is, as Premier Anna Bligh described, “a stunner”.

313 artworks from more than 160 artists in 25 Asia-Pacific countries are on show in the exhibition, which is expected to attract more than 700,000 people by next Easter.

There are also some striking short films, with more than 260 on show from 120 filmmakers including Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Brisbane-born Tracey Moffatt.

Moffatt’s juxtaposition of famous film scenes, mixing cross-cultural images of the faces and hands of both men and women as a level of excitement arises in the backing soundtrack is fun, brash and cheeky.

Some of the stories behind the artworks are as rich as the artworks themselves.

APT6 curator Suhanya Raffel stands beside a five-metre high mushroom cloud-shaped sculpture made from pots and pans, created by Indian artist Subodh Gupta in the first room of the exhibition. Titled Line of Control, it describes the emotions of living in the disputed border area between Pakistan and India. He does video work as well as this sculpture, but this work uses everyday materials These (pots and pans) are all used ones, they have a layer of life inside them already, the work is in the shape of a mushroom cloud and (the mushroom cloud) is associated now with a nuclear explosion.”That image is the quintessential 20th Century image. The work is titled Line of Control which is fighting the nuclear tensions between Pakistan and India, but also the inter-regional Kashmir line of control.”

Not 50 metres away is a stark white room, inside which Japanese sculpture Kohei Nawa has covered the complete body of a real Canadian Elk with clear glass and acrylic beads of various sizes.

It is a striking work, which he has titled PixCell Elk#2. “I bought the elk on the internet. It is already stuffed. I put glass beads on it and covered all surfaces,” he says in broken English. “It took almost four months. I want to have people think about ‘distance’. I think (with) the internet, now people treat things like the elk as ‘information’. “But I need them to think whether they are just ‘information’ or ‘real things”. So I want them to think about this distance as a reality.” This peice is amazing. seriously the efffect in the white room and the refection of everyone around in every glass bead is just brilliant.

Nearby is a large six-panel mosaic of 4000 glass shards and tiles made by Iranian artist, Monir Shadroudy Farmanfarmaian.

It has been bought by the Gallery of Modern Art and will remain as part of the GOMA’s permanent exhibition.

Phillipines-born, but Brisbane-shaped couple Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan are among those creating art thoughts for the young at heart, encouraging them to make toy planes, but to “think about migration”.

“Communication and slowing down people, making aeroplanes, making something together.”

There is also a major children’s event, with 17 artworks, many where young people can participate.

The exhibition will run until April 5, 2010. make sure you get down and see it, GOMA is completely free and is always full of interesting and creative artwork. A +1 from everyone here @BLAM.

Only a couple days elapsed before B found someone who wanted to explore the passage with us. B told me he talked to a few other people who couldn’t make it because of scheduling conflicts. He said they really grilled him for information about the cave and about the passage. He would not tell them which cave it was to ensure that we explored it to our satisfaction before we made it known to the public. Even the guy who ended up going with us did not know which cave until we were very close to it. And he was sworn to secrecy that he would not reveal the location of the cave to anyone on the planet. I won’t identify him by name, so I will just refer to him as “Joe”. Joe, B and I set out early in the morning to make sure we could spend all the time we wanted in the new passage. When we got to the cave we were able to rig up and descend rather quickly. It helps when you don’t have to haul half a hardware store down into the cave. Joe was impressed by our work. Even B and I took a minute to pat ourselves on the back for all of the hard work we put in. And for the fact that we made it through!

Joe is a rather thin caver who has had a lot of experience in caves. He said this might be the tightest squeeze he had been in, but it didn’t bother him. I knew that physically he would be able to make it, since I was bigger than him and I made it. He was just as excited as us to get through and get caving. Maybe more. He quickly got ready and was waiting to hear what the plan of attack was going to be. I figured I would send him through first, since he was ready, and I would follow. B would pass our gear through and wait for us outside the passage. B would give us two hours to return. That was nice of B to go down into the cave and baby-sit us. It gets boring sitting there in a cave. With our plan set, we were ready to roll.

It was, perhaps, irresponsible of us not to tell Joe about all of the unexplained events that occurred in the cave until after he had gone through. But what exactly to you tell someone? How many of the weird things did we need to reveal to him? We did not feel that we were in any danger or we would not go in the cave ourselves. So we did not tell him a thing prior to him entering Floyd’s Tomb. Of course when we did tell him afterwards, it was too late.

I couldn’t believe how easy Joe slipped through the passage. He said it was tight, but it sure didn’t look like it. Once he got in we passed him his gear, then I started in. Even though I knew that I could fit through it was still a slow trip through the Tomb. You can only go so fast when you’re scooting with your toes. When I reached the tight spot of the squeeze I had Joe snap a picture of me. I thought it would make a good photo. Once I got through B started to relay my stuff to me. Then disaster struck. I had gone all the way in and turned around to pull my gear through. I had to kneel down and still crouch down low. I had just got my helmet (ironically) and light and was turning around to feed the rope back to B when I smacked my head on the top of the passage. Human skull vs. solid rock. Rock won. I told B what had happened so he sent my first aid kit through. I was bleeding, but even worse I didn’t feel too good. I patched myself up, then told Joe I didn’t think I’d better continue. He looked like a little kid who was told that Christmas would be cancelled. Although I didn’t like the idea of him exploring the cave without me (for selfish reasons, of course), I wanted him to at least see part of the cave for making the trip out there.

I told him how far to go and how long it would take, then I sent him on his way. As I laid there I could hear him crawling into the darkness. His light disappeared after the first turn. I rested a minute or two, then began my journey back through the squeeze. It was disappointing to get all the way to the cave and then not be able to explore it to its end. Actually it is killing me! After I got through Floyd’s Tomb (which was painful) I sat down and munched on a Clif bar while B and I chatted. I told him I would pay for a motel room if he would stay overnight. Then we could see how I was doing the next day and make another attempt at the cave. I felt goofy for having smacked my head on the cave wall. B said he was willing to give it another try tomorrow. He was just as anxious to put some closure to this cave. As long as Joe would stay overnight, we determined to wrap things up the next day. Once this was settled we just sat back and enjoyed the darkness. We could hear no sounds coming from the passage. The silence reminded me of the scraping noise that I heard last time we were out there. I brought up the subject with B. Since I had not explored the cave completely I could not offer any explanation of what could be making the scraping noise. Or the change the wind strength. Or the rumbling. Or that terrible scream that we heard. Suddenly we both wished we had not sent Joe into the cave alone.

The sun was high, and so were hopes as the doors opened on day one at the GC Convention centre. We were greeted with a line-up of at least 200 people waiting to get in, before being told that this was a presale ticket line only. After that bungle, and purchasing our $22 tickets to the event, we lined up again. We were frisked by security, emptying our pockets of anything metallic, then, with a stamp on our wrists, we headed into the show.

The convention was contained within one room of the centre. There were 3 aisles, and 60 or so stands, ranging from Tattooists, Fashion, Hair and Beauty and even some Artists. This was obviously an exhibition intended only for those familiar with the tattoo culture and community, as anyone without prior knowledge and recognition of such things would become extremely bored and get an overall feel of detachment, even pretentiousness. Ever so, I plowed onwards.

There was a 200m stretch of tattooists, keenly working on the first payers of the convention. The place smelled of antiseptic and the familiar buzz of the tattoo guns filled the hall. It was really a sight to behold. 25 or so tattooist working on 25 people. The strange part was the observers. Tattooing is normally a rather intimate experience, really only the artist and client will ever see the tattoo being created from start to finish. So it really was quite a sight seeing this normally reclusive process being carried out infront of hundreds of people.

The opening ceremony was carried out by a traditional performance by a Aboriginal tribesman. Unfortuatly, soon after this, I became too sick with the cold I have currently had for 3 fucking weeks to stay any longer. It was a shame, because there was a pin up girl contest planned, along with numerous tattoo contests.

So dare I say, this is one for the ages. But never fear! The convention is on for another 2 days, wrapping up sunday. If its your thing, go.
